Desktop vs. Standard
I purchased some software that comes with the desktop edition of SQL 2000.
I have a Windows 2003 server and about 20 clients who need to access the
database.
Are there any limits to the desktop edition that I should be aware of?
Does it work with Windows 2003?
Does it have a limit to the number of simultaneous users?
Does it have memory limits?
Thanks
I assume you mean Desktop Engine, also known as MSDE...
1. Yes
2. No. But there's a performance throttling kicking in when you have > 8 simultaneously executing
queries.
3. Max size for db is 2GB (data, not log).

explanation (like Administrative Tools in ControlPanel, etc) and set up a
system admin config for this.you must run the programm in the command prompt
then supply the necessary parameters
1. start>run>cmd
2. cd\msdeinstaller
3. setup/? for help
4. use the sapassword switch

Desktop Server
1. Today I've installed webmatrix andMSDE200Aand followed this instruction
"Select 'SQL2kdesksp3.exe' and save it to your computer.
Double-click on theSQL2kdesksp3.exe you downloaded.
Once you have run the self extracting exe (SQL2kdesksp3.exe), go to a command prompt.
Start > Run > cmd
Navigate to the directory you expanded the self extracting exe to and change to the MSDE subdirectory.
The default is C:\sql2ksp3
Type Setup SAPWD=(Some password) SecurityMode=SQL
Example:
c:\sql2ksp3> Setup SAPWD=password SecurityMode=SQL
After that gets done running, MSDE is installed.
Start services
To get the SQL Server running and the SQL Agent we need start the services.
right click My Computer > manage > services
Double click the following and set to Automatic.
MSSQLSERVER
SQLSERVERAGENT
Make sure both are on automatic."
then I restarted my comp. I've tried to connect to database but it did not work.
I need the reply ASAP!!!!
2.What are the different among MSDE200A.exe, sql2ksp3.exe, and sql2kdesksp3.exe ?

FromMicrosoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A andMicrosoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a I have learned:
Desktop platform support for SQL Server Compact Edition?
I am doing some technology research for a new app and was wondering about the desktop operating system support for SQL Server compact edition. This app has a PC component and a mobile component, and both need to be data enabled, with syncronization between the PC and the mobile device.
So it seems like SSCE would be a good fit. Just run the SSCE client on both the PC and the device. But in the system requirements for SSCE it only gives XP as a valid desktop OS...
Is that correct? Obviously, desktop platform support for a production app will need to be broader than just XP.
Will SSCE desktop run on Win98,Win2000,XP Home, and Vista?
From my own experience, XP Home and Vista are supported. The official support list is:
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows CE; Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs; Windows Mobile 5.0; Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-Bit x86); Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition (32-Bit x86); Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32-Bit x86); Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32-bit x86); Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition (32-bit x86); Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86); Windows XP Home Edition ; Windows XP Media Center Edition; Windows XP Professional Edition ; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Hi Joao-
Thanks a lot for that info. Is there any way you can publish the URL to that list - there may be other useful info on that page?
Also, I notice Windows Mobile 6.0 is not on the supported operating systems list? Is there any estimate on when that will be supported?
|||Here's the link. Although not explicitly stated, I don't believe you will have problems running on Windows Mobile 6.|||On Windows Mobile 6.0, SQL Compact 3.1 is included in ROM.

Desktop Application With Windows Mobile
Your desktop application that connects to SQL Mobile is using System.Data.SqlServerCe for the ADO.NET provider. You cannot access SQL Server 2000 or 2005 using this provider, so in order for your application to work against SS2000/2005 you would need to provide a data access layer based on System.Data.SqlClient.
